Eighteen years of shipping software
Most of it inside someone else's complicated environment
I have been delivering software since 2008 and leading projects and delivery teams for most of that time. Since 2022 I have worked as an independent consultant.
Currently I am engaged with QIAGEN's Digital Applications team, leading the transition from SAP R/3 to S/4HANA across business-critical platforms: webshop cart and checkout, the MyQIAGEN customer portal, and customer care applications. The work involves the order-to-cash business stream, external vendors and internal development teams — aligning requirements, managing test cycles and keeping staging environments honest.
The projects I am most proud of sit further from the office. I scoped and delivered SCOPE for the UN World Food Programme — the platform used to register people receiving food assistance and to plan and report on distributions — and deployed it in country offices on site in Ethiopia and Thailand, and remotely in Nepal, Bhutan and India. For Zoetis I led PetDialog and PetDialog+, a behaviour and health tracking wearable for dogs with a companion app, from design through pilots to launch across four continents.
Those two taught me most of what I know about delivery. One had to work for humanitarian field staff on poor connectivity, where a failed registration has real consequences; the other combined hardware, firmware, mobile, veterinary input and market-by-market launches. Neither tolerated a plan that only existed in a document.
Every project turns out to be a different story. Client needs, product requirements and cultural differences all change what good delivery looks like, so I would rather adapt the method to the situation than apply a framework and hope.
Selected work
SAP R/3 to S/4HANA transition across customer-facing platforms
Replacing the ERP underneath a life sciences business while its customers keep ordering. I lead the project management and act as software development lead for QIAGEN's Digital Applications team, responsible for keeping every customer-facing platform integrated and working through the migration.
- Webshop cart and checkout — the revenue path. Pricing, availability and order creation all move to a new ERP without the storefront going quiet
- MyQIAGEN customer portal — orders, addresses, events, saved carts, and the regulated documents life sciences customers depend on: safety data sheets and certificates of analysis
- Customer care applications — so support staff never lose visibility of an order mid-migration
- Order-to-cash across business and IT — aligning requirements between the OTC business stream, external vendors and internal development teams, who rarely describe the same process the same way
- Test cycles and staging environments — the unglamorous discipline that decides whether a cutover is an event or an incident
Virtual Events HUB platform
New virtual events platform — webinars, presentations, live broadcast, social components and knowledge base — built by a team of up to ten Sitecore, .NET, front-end, QA, BA and UX specialists. Owned the roadmap, MVP scope and coordination between internal Scrum teams and external vendors.
Knowledge Hub migration
Migration of the Knowledge Hub to new designs and a new Sitecore CMS structure: new modules and components, resource database migration, webinar service upgrades, new support pages and forms, and new search functionality.
PetDialog & PetDialog+ — behaviour and health tracking for dogs
A connected health product for companion animals: a mobile and web application for owners to monitor their animal's health, activity, behaviour and care, paired with PetDialog+ — a wearable device for dogs that tracked behaviour and medical condition and fed the data back into the app. I ran the delivery from design through pilot programmes to launch.
- Hardware and software together — coordinating a wearable device alongside the mobile and web application it depended on, with the integration between them as the critical path
- Medical orientation — built with veterinary input so the data was clinically meaningful rather than decorative, in a company operating under animal health regulation
- Pilot before scale — designing and coordinating pilot plans so the product met real owners and real animals before committing to full market launches
- Global rollout — country-by-country launches across Europe, South Africa, Japan and Australia, each with its own market, language and regulatory considerations
SCOPE — beneficiary registration and distribution platform
SCOPE is the web-based platform the World Food Programme uses to register the people it assists and to run the logistics of getting food and cash transfers to them. I scoped, planned and delivered the platform, then deployed it with the country offices that had to use it.
- Beneficiary registration — the identity records that determine who receives assistance, where a data error has consequences for a real household
- Intervention setup, distribution planning and transfers — the operational core of how aid actually reaches people
- Distribution reporting — the accountability trail donors and auditors require
- Deployed in the field — on site with country offices in Ethiopia and Thailand, and remotely in Nepal, Bhutan and India, working with staff whose connectivity and conditions were nothing like a development environment
HorseDialog & ItchTracker — equine care and treatment tracking
Two further animal health products alongside PetDialog. HorseDialog applied the same monitoring approach to equine care, tracking health, activity, behaviour and medical assistance for horse owners. ItchTracker tracked corticosteroid treatment of itching in dogs, with a companion web platform that let veterinarians monitor and report on the treatment process — delivered to the UK, Italy, France, Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Japan and Australia.
